ACHRU Names an Additional Co-Scientific Director

Dr. Ruta Valaitis is the ACHRU’s newest Co-Scientific Director. She is pleased to join Drs. Maureen Markle-Reid and Jenny Ploegin leading the research program they founded in 2013. Dr. Valaitis, holder of the Dorothy C. Hall Chair in Primary Health Care Nursing, is excited to undertake this new leadership role.

“I’m looking forward to working closely with this incredible team that does such vital research to promote optimal aging at home,” says the Deputy Director of the PAHO/WHO Collaborating Centre on Primary Care Nursing and Health Human Resources. “I’m particularly interested in finding ways to promote health and wellness with special attention to addressing the social determinants of health applying the principles of primary health care.”

Dr. Valaitis believes this requires strengthening of the delivery of community health services including public health, primary care and home health care services as well as building stronger linkages between community-based health social services. She is also interested in exploring strategies to overcome the problem of siloed sectors by building stronger partnerships and collaborations between health and community services.

She is a member of the ACHRU team that is working to implement a new technology in home care, My Stroke Team (MyST), a web-based app that enables home care workers, including Personal Support Workers, to share information in real time, while also empowering stroke patients to actively participate in their own care. She is also leading the study which is exploring the caregiver experience of patients enrolled in the Health Links program and is a co-investigator on the ACHRU study team that is evaluating a hospital-to-home transitional care intervention for older adults with MCC and depression
